Working on studio 2.0!

1. Danny
Danny ” is a story from the viewpoint of a coal miner's son. It's a call to action for son, and for the father. The deep backstory is driven by my fascination with all things railroad, and arose out of my travels to the holy places of railroad history. One gem from these travels, that I have borrowed context from for this song, is the biographical book “My Life On Mountain Railroads” by William John Gould, editedby William R. Gould. http://www.usu.edu/usupress/books/index.cfm?isbn=1931
2. Catching the Waves

Catching the Waves ” stems from being reminded that talking – verbal communication – means different things for women, versus men. “Are you listening?” has a critical context, and in this song inaction plays a starring role.

3. Signpost

Do you know where you're headed?  Do you know where you've been, I mean, really know? We're all searching for direction, purpose, and meaning in our lives. I think it's innately human to be driven to try to figure this out. “ Signpost ” is about those things that you think are pointing to the next place.  Imagine yourself in the central California desert, say near Mojave, or any one of a number of little railroad towns in the area, thirty or forty years after they came into existence. The railroad signs would have been the only indication of where you were.  The Southern Pacific made them out of redwood. They feel like the wood has been in a toaster over for a hundred years – bone dry, but still readable.

4. Vanishing Train

It's lucky when you realize that you are in fact enjoying a high point in your life.  It's also lucky if you can realize it's almost over, and it's your time to take action and take that last, “ Vanishing Train ”, out of town.

5. Time to Go

Time to Go ” is song that's a Northern California harvest, from a fellow writer from Sacramento who had recently moved to town.  In a conversation about a variety of things, we tried to pinpoint exactly when she decided to take action and get the “hell out of Dodge”, so to speak.

6. Cafe Angel

Have you ever had a serious crush on someone, but you just couldn't figure out a way to break the ice – especially if you always seem have an audience?  “ Cafe Angel ” is a portrait of being stuck in the middle of inaction.

7. Delores' Diary

We all have people around us that make our existence possible – many of whom we never have a reason to meet or get to know, although they might be well worth the time. People like the mailman, the garbage man, the cashier at the grocery. “ Delores' Diary ” examines a person that is observant and engaged in the truly deep questions of life, yet she isn't celebrated or recognized for this. I was really fortunate circumstances drove me to take action and break the ice.

8. Pocket Knife Blues

Part of life is when you learn from your mistakes –although sometimes what seem mistakes later turn out to be the best thing anyway. This is a whimsical look at a situation where I plunged in, thinking I was prepared, and instead got in over my head.
