Experiences, observations, emotions, fantasies, and hopes. These are the hues that color John's music. The things he's been through as a human and participant in the American experience are reflected in his songs, but also he tries on the shoes of people he meets, and the shoes of people he's read or learned about. It's very possible you will find a part of yourself somewhere in one of his songs.
We perceive music on many levels - you might call them "raw sound, rhythm, melody, and lyrics"; there are other definitions out there, of course - and John works to meld all those layers in his music. This, in a town dominated by "three chords and the truth" (according to Harlan Howard, anyway; of course we speak of Nashville) - John seeks out that same level of honesty, while bringing a less rigid approach to musical choices.
